United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Before Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting the following week.
Sharaa was named transitional president subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that drove out the previous leader in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
He had been subject to UN sanctions in his role as head of the Islamist group the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. America delisted HTS from a list of foreign terror groups this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for assisting the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
The pair met initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through Arab nations.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.
Earlier American Trip
Monday's visit is not Sharaa's first trip to America this year. This past fall, he made history as the first Syrian leader to address the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.
During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
