As Winter Nights …
As winter nights extend
The count of their hours;
As clouds their tempests discharge
On the elevated buildings.
Now allow the hearths glow
And cups brim over with drink;
Let melodious words amaze
With concord divine.
Now golden taper glows
Must serve sweet affection
As youthful revels, masques and royal displays,
Drowsiness's weighty spells banish.
This period does properly dispense
With sweethearts' long discourse;
Much speech has certain defence,
Even if beauty no remorse.
All do not all things expertly;
Some measures gracefully perform;
Various complex riddles relate
Various verses effortlessly recite.
The sunny period has its joys;
While winter his satisfactions;
Although passion and all its enjoyments are but diversions,
They reduce monotonous dark hours.
About the Poet
This Elizabethan poet (living from 1567 until 1620), a writer, composer and medical practitioner, transformed into an ardent Classicist while learning at Cambridge, although he left without receiving a degree.
Poetic Analysis
The poet's verses never seem shallow in writing. This particular poem praises the comforts of winter with typical refinement and exactness, accompanied by fascinatingly contradictory sentiments adding emotional conflict.
The writer demonstrates himself as a sensuous conjuror of mood, but he's not solely that: he debates internally, and thinks the debate completely.
Metrical Structure
Iambic three-foot lines serves as the poem's primary rhythm, enabling a light but firm "pace" suitable to the themes. However in every stanza, the second-to-last verse claims additional length.
Gloom, bad weather, boredom create differentiation compared to the continuous radiance of refined domestic enjoyments.

I conjecture he delighted in practising it however that, conceptually, he proved ambitious for poetry to contain a wider intellectual breadth.
